Name: Athena Karpusi
Age: 25
Ethnicity: Greek
Personality: On the outside, Athena appears to be a gentle person who is always driven by wonder, passion, and curiosity. A sunny, carefree lover of pleasure, Athena is always out in the open to take part in things that makes her happy or content. She has a great love for animals, being especially fond of cats and owls, and does not hesitate to display her affections towards them. However, her advances upon other people are quite the opposite; her kind of affection towards individuals in particular is more subtle and it entirely depends on the environment and the people. How she acts can be entirely situational. To those she is more comfortable with, she can be playful and outspoken whereas she can be more reserved around strangers.
Whatever the situation, there are times when she becomes awkward or silent in cogitation, which had been mistaken as a facet of shyness. Truth be told, she does have moments of sheepishness and pressured moments in time, but it is always followed up by such boldness and extroversion. She can be quite the irresistible conversationalist and is the type to talk on and on if sparked with interest. Since Athena knows much, it makes it very easy for her to branch off ordinary conversational topics to become something philosophical and deep—if the other person can take it (there is nothing more she despises are those who cannot carry a decent conversation). Due to this, Athena scrutinizes people and judges them very closely, especially upon introduction. Though she may appear to like a person out of courtesy with a smile and bright eyes, she can develop a latent distaste for them. This is a hard vice to shake off, she admits, but it is a natural procedure for her to do.
That is because she takes in the perspective that she is a very intelligent woman—and without a doubt, she is. With the acknowledgement of intelligence comes great esteem. Inwardly, Athena views herself to be more superior since she believes that she has much more knowledge, maturity, and self-actualization to be beyond others. However, she does not consider herself to be arrogant. In honesty, she does not display pomposity and does not wield her wisdom as a sword against people. Rather, she fashions it as a shield for herself tobash her way through protect herself throughout her trail of endeavors. Perhaps what makes her likeable is that she strives to be humble but confident, and it is a creed she has been following ever since she noticed how badly the arrogant had fell.
When she is not lost in thought or being clumsy and absent-minded, she can definitely impress a person with how easily she can squeeze in talk of the stars, the sea, and what denizens live beyond the horizon. Her passion is probably the main reason why she is captivating. She loves to learn, stargaze, chart stars, try to find the truth, figure out the past, look at ancient things—goodness, there are many things she loves. This passion in loving life is really the purest essence about her. Being a pleasure seeker, she tries to find happiness in all aspects of life. Though there is something about sex and intimacy that is a little different. Something not so pure is her tendency to manipulate others to fit her frame of contentment. Athena is the most happy when she feels praised, loved and wanted by more than one person—even more so if she does not outwardly try to. Yet commitment is an issue; for her, sex will be the greatest prize to the first person or champion who can thwart all other competition for her heart. So though she can be very open about sex and be quite lewd at times, the actual pleasure of doing sex with others is not something she can readily take yet.
“With time” is the motto that can be slapped on her back. Because Athena is a woman who sets up her own pace, albeit it is somewhat slow compared to others, she has a mindset that she can do absolutely anything and that she can resolve any problem with time, that it can be done eventually, somehow. Some may view this as laziness (and without a doubt, sometimes it is) and others may view it as a loss in potential, but Athena is fully aware of what she does and hardly lets other people decide things for her. Her stubbornness to stay at her self-defined 'equilibrium' is what hones her iron will. Therefore, regardless of the situation, she will somehow try to have things go her way.Even when she is in need of aid, she always tries to find a way to manipulate the terms so that she can feel more in control of herself. It can be said that she is very cautious about letting others reign her because she fears oppression, yet she will never accept it without a fight.
Though her anger hardly surfaces and grudges are easily let go, that does not mean it is impossible to rouse her to a boiling point. When somebody annoys her, that is already bad news. When somebody angers her, it had been as if all of the gods and goddesses blessed her with the power of ferocity. Okay maybe she’s not that vicious, but she will be very fierce if threatened. Her wisdom has equipped her with an iron tongue and she won’t be afraid to use it if she feels attacked—and this is very different from feeling ‘challenged’. To a challenge, she would gladly take up the offer on fair terms but to a threat, there are no rules to war.
So, to wrap things up, Athena is a smart lady with a lot of wits and willpower. She's a bit of a klutz and tends to get herself into some silly/bad situations because she sometimes overlooks small details. Athena is driven by passion and her extensive knowledge can make her a pretty darn good person to hang out with. Plus she's mega hot.
Ship/Island/Authority: Idk do I have to make up an island.
Occupation: Idk like a maester or an independent. She charts stars and maps, writes books about stuff (seafaring and navigation might should actually be the good one here cus of the au), sells homemade medicine, and can be the town midwife.
History: When her child was born, Mother Karpusi was told that her daughter was going to be wise. As the years tinkled away, pre-adolescent Athena was smart, well-mannered, and complacent. The only trouble that worried her family was that she did not utter a word. She refused speak for years and so many feared that she was mute. Rather, the girl was quiet by choice; she listened and watched in the midst of her own silence. No one really knew what kind of child she was and what kind of person she was going to grow up to be. The village children only saw her as a loner and so they took it upon themselves to bully her. Young but enduring, Athena braved through torturous antics and teasing without a fuss. She saw no worth in arguing, fighting, or crying.
It was at the age of seven when she decided grew tired of being quiet. Her mother was telling her father a riddle, one that her father laughingly could not solve. With every answer, Athena became more exasperated. When he gave up to ask for an answer, he was surprised to hear little Athena explain. It was not a challenging riddle at all, but a simplistic one that people tended to over-complicate. It was a relief to her family but an annoyance to her since they began to prod her eagerly to talk more and more. It only took a few years for Athena to 'out-talk' her grandmother. The household was livelier more than ever.
Talkative dinnertable conversations of grand stories and tales of the ocean fascinated Athena. Her uncle, undoubtedly her second father, was a crew member of a great vessel. He brought home artifacts, strange spices, fish, and best of all, stories so detailed, it was almost fable. Athena took in every word by the spoonfull and relayed the stories to her friends with just as much fervor. Her superstitions and desire for more knowledge began with her uncle.
Yet the large family became quite troubled during Athena's teen years. Money woes strained relationships. Joyous laughter was strangled away by heated arguments between kin and kin. The gamblers in the family were to blame, namely her oldest brother Nick and her maternal uncle. The family became prone to getting loans and borrowing money, much to the annoyance of many of their neighbors. Despite the tightness of the financial knots, Athena was rather nonchalant about the lifestyle change. Her optimistic "it'll get better somehow" mindset allowed her to read books, study, take on other hobbies, and socialize without much of an issue.
The money issues didn't really bother her until her adulthood. Most of the village branded her surname as being the beggar's family because of her older brother's bad habits. Yet Athena persevered and had been trying to purify her family name back to its former glory. She became slightly recognized through her books and through her acts of kindness but the bitterness of others towards her family was always discernible.
