IC:
Name: Niklaas de Vries
Age: 27
Personality: Blunt, dryly sarcastic, and seemingly unable to keep his damn mouth shut, Niklaas is the definition of an asshole, in most regards. The fact of the matter is that he's the type of person who would much rather speak his mind and face the dislike or being avoided than keeping his mouth shut because it's “mean” or “impolite.” If being himself is wrong, then he doesn't want to be right, plain and simple.
His sharp tongue leads to many dismissing, insulting comments to other people. If he has an opinion about you, he will say it, no need to sugar coat something to someone you don't like. True this attitude has left him with little friends and more arguments, but so what? It's your own problem if you can't handle your precious feelings being hurt or your ego bruised. It doesn't matter if you're of someone of great importance or not, no one is immune to criticism or insults. That in mind, he does know when the back off , he doesn't want to piss someone off to the point they'd want to murder him. The dead can't make money, after all.
Interesting to note is that Niklaas is a man who wears his emotions on his sleeve. The term “emotional subtlety” is completely lost on him, but that's just the man he is. He hates, he loves, he get annoyed, and yes he even does get depressed; every little bit of it is shown on the surface. Unless he makes a conscious effort to hide his emotions, and to his credit he is starting to get the whole “poker face” thing down.
Insulting and not one to enjoy physical contact, you would think that Niklaas is all hard, cold indifference without a drop of love or compassion in him, which is pretty far from the truth. Anyone is capable of love and compassion and all that mushy crap, the problem is finding someone who isn't a complete and total disappointment. All his previous relationships, man or woman, have been either unfulfilled, miserable, or some detestable mixture of both. Lady Luck doth not bless this man's love life, so it's much easier to have one night stands. For one night you feel the thrill of passion, sweaty skin gliding across sweaty skin, that one magical night where you feel like the greatest person in the world. And when the morning comes and it fades like a dream? There's no regret attached.

Three Choices For Positions: Seven of Diamonds
I've played Niklaas as a Knight before, and while he wasn't the most respectable person, he was good at his job. Past experience aside, Niklaas knows when shit needs to get done, and he isn't against his country waging war in order to achieve the best possible result. He's got the making of an ideal soldier, the problem s that he has to know that his commanding officer won't lead him to his death like a lemur.
Exiled Ace; former Seven of Spades
Because the Underground is where all the cool kids are. Lately I've been tempted with the idea of Niklaas earning his keep in a...less than “morally just” matter, and if that means making him an assassin or a mercenary for the highest bidder, than so be it. Like he's said himself “everything revolves around money.” He'd be the type to get in, get out, get paid with no attached finesse or theatrics to his work, as such he would probably use a long ranged, “impersonal” weapon like a sniper rifle when doing assassinations. Quick, clean, gets the job done, and he's less liable to get caught red handed. No pun intended.
Joker
Slightly more "morally just" than being an Underground mecenary, working up on the Aboveground allows for me to play around with the whole "Nik is a merchant" idea that Dutch history has provided. That said he would still be a Joker, and with so much freedom comes the unfortunate downside of being unwanted and untrusted (his high price for foreign goods, legal or otherwise, probably wouldn't help either), but he wouldn't really care either way. With Lady Luck on his side, all his business deals would end in profit, even if his partner hates his guts. When there isn't trades to be done, there's always assorted odd jobs to be done, and Niklaas would be willing to do whatever so long as it got money in his pocket.
